A cold wallet is an offline wallet — a hardware device, or a seed phrase stored on paper or metal — whose private keys never touch the internet. The opposite is a hot wallet (on a phone, in a browser or at an exchange), which is convenient but always online and therefore attackable.
Why it concerns a casino player. A casino balance is the casino's risk and an exchange balance is the exchange's risk: neither is really your money until it is behind your own keys. The practical rule is simple — withdraw a larger win from the casino immediately and leave only an amount on the playing account whose loss you can afford. A cold wallet holds the long-term balance, a hot wallet is the working float.
Basic rules:
- The seed phrase only in physical form. Not in the cloud, not as a photo, not emailed to yourself. - Test recovery with a small amount before you start keeping serious money there. - Money still moves to the casino and back through a hot wallet — a cold wallet is not an everyday payment instrument. - Choose a network that both the wallet and the casino support, and send a test amount first. Choosing the wrong network is the most common way to lose crypto permanently.
A cold wallet has another effect too: every extra step in moving money is a pause. If you are considering self-exclusion or feel that deposits happen too easily, this is one of the few technical barriers that genuinely works — the other aids are collected on the responsible gambling page. A comparison of networks, fees and confirmation times is in the payments overview; the question of key ownership is explained by the term non-custodial wallet.
