A crypto casino safety checklist: twelve things to check before your first deposit

A crypto deposit cannot be reversed, so everything must be checked beforehand. Twelve points: licence, terms, provably fair, two-factor login, a test withdrawal and more.

A bank transfer can be recalled if needed. A card payment can be disputed. A crypto deposit cannot be taken back: the transaction is confirmed, the money is in the casino's wallet, and if anything goes wrong everything depends on the casino's goodwill. That is why checking before the first deposit matters more at a crypto casino than at any other type.

Here are twelve points. None takes more than a couple of minutes, and together they cover most of the reasons players lose money. If a casino fails three or more, do not deposit.

1. Who actually runs the casino?

Look in the footer for the company name, country of registration and registration number. If the footer has only a brand and a copyright line, that is a bad sign. The same company name should also appear in the terms. If the company has operated under another brand before, look for feedback on that: it is common and not a problem in itself, but history is information.

2. What is the licence and who supervises it?

Most crypto casinos operate under a Curaçao licence. That is not the same as an Estonian MTA licence and gives the player less protection. What the new Curaçao framework changes is explained in Curaçao's new licensing system, and the regulator's official website is the Curaçao Gaming Authority. Check that the licence number and company name match the licensor's public register, not only the logo on the casino's own page. What it means legally for an Estonian player is set out in Is a no-KYC casino legal for an Estonian player?.

3. What do the terms say about withdrawals?

Open the terms and look for three things: minimum and maximum withdrawal, the right to close an account and the conditions under which the casino may void winnings. If the last is vaguely worded ("suspicious activity", "breach of terms" with no examples), that is where disputes arise. The guide How wagering really works helps you spot bonus terms that obstruct withdrawal too. Terms: wagering requirement, maximum withdrawal and maximum bet.

4. Are the games verifiably fair?

Crypto casinos usually have their own games, so-called originals, designed to be verified. The concept is provably fair: the casino publishes a hash of its server seed before the game, you add your client seed, and after the game you can check that the result matches the promised calculation. How to do it yourself is explained in Provably fair: how to verify it yourself. For the theoretical background there is the Wikipedia article on commitment schemes. Important: provably fair verifies the fairness of one game, not the casino's ability to pay.

5. Is two-factor login present and switched on?

If a casino does not offer multi-factor authentication, your account security rests entirely on your password. Switch on 2FA before the first deposit and prefer an authenticator app to SMS. A casino balance is as valuable as a wallet, and an attacker needs only your password.

6. What happens with KYC, and at what amount?

Even a "no-KYC" casino usually has a KYC threshold: an amount or activity at which documents start to be requested. Look in the terms for what the threshold is and what exactly is asked for. An explanation is in the glossary: no-KYC. If it is not stated, ask support in writing and save the reply. The worst moment to discover a KYC requirement is when the win is already in your account. Our sister site explains how it affects withdrawals: KYC check and withdrawal.

7. Are networks and coins clear?

The casino has to say which coins and networks it supports, and what the minimum deposits and fees are. The wrong network is the most expensive mistake crypto allows: TRC-20 vs ERC-20 explains the differences. A casino's deposit address must appear only in your logged-in account, not in an email or a chat.

8. Make a test deposit and a test withdrawal

This is the most important point on the list. Make the smallest sensible deposit and try to withdraw it straight away. Note the time, confirmations, fee and whether the casino asked for more information. A casino that pays a small amount quickly does not guarantee it will pay a large one, but a casino that does not pay a small one has already given its answer. A step-by-step description is in How to withdraw money from a crypto casino, and the payments page summarises the methods.

9. Check the domain and the page address

Fake casinos and wallet pages use similar names and tiny typos. Bookmark the correct page and always log in from there, not through a search result, an email or a message link. Never enter a seed phrase on any casino page; a casino never needs it. For general background there is the Wikipedia article on phishing.

10. See what players say about disputes

Search the casino's name together with words like "withdrawal", "blocked" or "scam", and read the descriptions of disputes, not only the ratings. Every casino has a few disputes. Look for a pattern: the same cause, repeated, with the casino's reply always the same. On our own Complaints page we explain how we handle disputes.

11. Set limits and a plan before playing

Estonian mandatory limits do not apply at crypto casinos, which means all restraint is in your own hands. Set a deposit limit in the casino's settings if it has one, and decide before a session how much you are willing to lose. There is a thorough article on this: When HAMPI does not apply: setting your own limits at a foreign casino and the limits page. The basics of budgeting are also explained in the freespin.ee article on a gambling budget.

12. Know how to stop

The last point is not about the casino but about you. Crypto games are fast, transactions are instant and stakes are often small, which makes losing control easy. Take the self-assessment if you notice you are playing more than you planned. In Estonia help is available from the helpline 15410 and the National Institute for Health Development, and blocking software is offered by BetBlocker, which helps keep gambling sites out of reach abroad too.

How to read the result

If a casino passes all twelve points the risk is lower, but not zero. If it fails three or more, skip it: there are other places to play. Compare options in our list of fast-withdrawal casinos and on the no-KYC page, and read the pangakasiinod.ee article on bank payments that do not arrive if you prefer euros and bank links instead.

One rule that is not on the list: never share a seed phrase No casino, support agent, exchange or "technical representative" needs your seed phrase. Whoever asks for it is trying to empty your wallet.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Curaçao licence enough?

It is a minimum, not a guarantee. A licence means the operator is registered and subject to some oversight, but player protection is weaker than under an Estonian MTA licence. Check the company and licence number yourself.

How big should the test deposit be?

The smallest amount that clears the casino's minimum and the network fee. The aim is to test the process, not to play. If the fee is more than half the amount, choose a cheaper network.

What if the test withdrawal is delayed?

Check whether a transaction ID exists and open it in a block explorer. If there is no ID and the casino does not answer within two working days, do not make a larger deposit, and write the dispute down.
